WFW – Day 1.5. Top Gun

Posted: February 5, 2019 in Travel

When last we left our hero he was heading off to mix briefly with the GU fully expecting to be disappointed and trudging back to Admirals Club for several hours. Flight was at 0940 so thought would wander down early around 0830 to get lay of Gate 52 G at LAX. Just as well. The 52 alphabet terminals may well be closer to SD than LA and require a shuttle from main terminal and this was not an efficient process. Not surprisingly big planes take precedence and so had the odd prospect of 3 shuttles ready to pick up the almost 100 passengers now but keep about 30 m away because one plane was still at gate! Finally got on board one and after literally crossing up and down in front of oncoming planes we got there ! It was about 0910 now and the plane was actually boarding. Is that a green tick against FerD I see on the monitor? Sweet. Not only did I get on early flight but got a bulkhead seat with great legroom. It is literally only 20-25 min flight but actually getting out of LAX makes it closer to an hour. Arrived in SD just after 10:15 and then bag was first off and taxi waiting. Got to unit just after 10:45 and thus had gained almost half a day really. I tell ya some times it seems like always bent over the bonnet and then there are those days when the pants are around the ankles with bed flute pointing north and getting plenty of attention 🤠 Of course a bit Shaggis O’Murphy by now but with worse weather on way for next 36 hrs time to get out and about

The unit looks great and in a quiet area even though near to Gaslamp District. Showers were coming and going but first chore always is get that AT&T sim for next few weeks. Works very well and makes it very easy to check in out and about

Research had shown that Kansas City BBQ was a filming location for Top Gun and was close to USS Midway museum to boot. In fact San Diego was used for several scenes from movie. It’s cheesy sure but these are the quirks you look for in cities . I had a beer to be sociable only honest

A short 5 min walk, admittedly in rather heavy rain, had me saying well hello sailor rather quickly. What an impressive sight indeed, especially the flight deck. It is simply massive and dominates the area around Navy Pier and the Embarcadero. Of course the real joy on days like this are the extras you find like the Unconditional Surrender Statue and Bob Hope Memorial

So on what was lining up mostly as a long day of flying and sitting around airports ended with 2 memorable highlights already and haven’t been here a whole day yet .

And of course always drawn to the quirk that amuses moi on way home. They had me at Pussy Playpen. Then the penny dropped….

WFW – Day 1

Posted: February 4, 2019 in Travel

And the day before to be honest but realistically first day covers about 43 hrs so what is another 24 between friends

So day before departure travelled down to Brisvegas from Flashman HQ Sunshine Coast to see Ferguson Matriach and then onto first birthday party for the booteeful Eloise . Filled in day nicely before decamping at Novotel Brisbane Airport for last night at under 100 kg . Apparently. CLP is along for ride at present so any last minute washing and ironing is covered. She is heading off for a week at Straddie as well. I don’t understand how some people can afford a holiday like that every year . Had a quick look at DFO which I only NOW realise does not stand for David Ferguson Outlet. Still able to get a new pair of quality Brooks shoes to take away if no signed images of the famous one.

In case you were wondering about the smile and the beer was notified earlier of a business class upgrade ( points) for long haul to LAX. 🍆👄 Devoted followers would know that this is first time on the Dreamliner and of course Premium Economy is base level entry now for reduntirees. However the PE on Qantas does not get great reviews from a leg room point of view whereas BC is uniformly well regarded. As a last day upgrade to get the bassinet position so should at least get a good sleep and just hope Hostie remembers to burp me before putting me down for sleepy byes byes. Really don’t know if any impact really (unlikely) but i reserve the right to whine later just in case. Right at the pointy end of plane, if any further forward would be wearing a cap and epaulettes.

So out early of course and left the batmobile in long term parking for month and proceeded to check in a mere 5 hrs before departure. Or not, doesn’t open until 4 hrs as you have to talk to security . Ok so had some breakfast and then CLP and I went our separate ways but first she did have to go to the ladies to dry her eyes. Simple enough check in and “express” security lane had me bar adjacent by about 7:45 . And the bar was open………later from LAX dudes.

Good flight and of course arrived on time having cancelled my earlier flight to SD with only the 3 hr window. Food was excellent as was service and comfort. At end of day it is still 13 hrs but this is probably as good as it gets excluding first class of course

Customs is still a nightmare but really seems slower than actually is and still terminal adjacent just after 7:15 pm. I asked for any earlier flights and am on standby for my original 09:40 flight but don’t like my chances 😏 . On the glass half full front was surprised that Qantas Club still gets you into Admirals Lounge. My research had said otherwise. It’s not the greatest lounge by any means and always crowded but the beer is cold and free. Still rather full after food on flight so imagine will have a brew and then go down and see how this Standby caper works and fails and then return to AC for a more serious go as will then have a few hrs to fill in. Meanwhile

WFW – The Day Trips

Posted: January 30, 2019 in Travel

One of the best ways to see more of USA each time is a day trip from the main city you have decamped in. This has worked well in past with trips to Salem, Fort Worth, Philly etc. Not all the same day natch 🙂 In some cases , like with Baltimore, a day trip one visit has led to a full week stay on subsequent visit. Of course as each trip passes the main cities have been seen and day trips become more limited from less populated areas. As is case this year

First up is San Diego. A day trip into Tijuana appealed initially but knowing my luck I would get an ugly donkey. The most popular google search for Tijuana also includes “safety” as well so when you throw in have to cross the border, either legally or through randomly placed slats, the appeal dims. Will just grab a bottle of Tequila and watch the AT&T Pro Am from Pebble on TV instead that weekend. Plenty to do in SD really anyway. Of course I do have a kinda day trip to LA, or LAX surrounds to be fair . Have done LA before and dont really want to go anywhere near Hollywood again after last visit. People kept throwing Nespresso Pods at me which was confusing until I realised they thought I was Clooney, G. So after speaking to Sheryl Crow ( I am an Instagram influenza A) I came around to her kinda thinking.

The Yanks do seem to love their Ubers these days but there is the Rapid 3 bus from near hotel which takes me down to Santa Monica in about 40 mins, traffic not withstanding. Mind you, better not still be there when the sun does come up over Santa Monica Blvd or could be in a bit of bother for NYC flight. For $1.25 each way, officially interested. I think that is about $7.50 AUD 😦 On a side note, and a little tease for devoted followers, CLP and I are in initial stages of planning our Africa Soujourn for 2020 – Call Me Bwana The deposit for this trip requires sending plenty $US to a Hong Kong Bank. Not only are you bent over bonnett with chili on stick but then they spray mace in your eyes at the HK end! Not as if all Hope is lost I guess

Next stop is NYC of course and previously done day trips to the main cities nearby. This time thinking of Atlantic City but could be a gamble in winter……. It is a rather long and boring bus ride actually but the boardwalk does appeal especially when not crowded. Put chances at 50:50 for now and will just depend on how week pans out. By then the Govt probably closed down again and all the TSA workers will be in the casinos trying to get money for food. May just opt to spend more time exploring New Jersey as have been rewatching Sopranos lately but already done “The Tour” last trip.

Finally we get to Baltimore and appears options limited. Looking at Annapolis so I can finally be Up Where I Belong ? Once again its a bus ride but shorter than the AC one and less to do in Baltimore than NYC after all. I would say 80:20 chance at present. Apart from men in uniform can get my fill of crab cakes and look at boats. Once again on Instagram asked Gere, R what was the best take away u can get there but think he misunderstood….

Getting close now and just a matter of days until Qantas contact me to say I have been upgraded to BC for free. Or not. As Gloria Gaynor said though I Will Survive. Maybe more appropriately when it comes to USA simply

Wired for Winter (WFW) – The Preamble

Posted: January 26, 2019 in Travel

With one week to go until lift off its time to start thinking of a weather report that includes a temp of < 20 degrees celsius in any 24 hr period! Darool Darool. Of course weather is a mixed bag and one needs to be careful what one wishes for. #beastfromeast When it comes to Winter in America am always trying to recapture the magic of February 2015 when the skies were blue, the ground was white, and the President was black. After all

So the acronym, which I thought was clever at the time and now stuck with, refers to not only the weather but also final destination of Baltimore, home of much acclaimed The Wire TV series. Ok not my best but then also included one warm and two cold destinations so not too smart in the clothes needed department either. I blame the Qld heat.

First up is San Diego. Have always wanted to go but basically California is Qld with the fan set on low so not great appeal but SD itself has a lot to offer and is not La La Land. Sadly still have to land at LAX of course and in what can only be described as late onset common sense cancelled my flight out with 3 hr window to a later flight with 6 hr window. This was before the Govt Shutdown and the prospect of dealing with pissed off, and deservedly so, TSA agents. Even when everyone is happy and clapping their hands 3 hrs is a bit toight. Of course now Qantas will arrive early, will fly through customs with my natural charm and wide eyed innocence and only have a mere 5 hrs to fill in. Frequent US travelers like moi would know that US airport lounges, and entry requirements, are very different to Aussie ones and think you have to be the pilot or at least first class to access the Admirals Lounge at American. My Ruby One World status wont cut it. First World problems, at least Govt is back open for a few weeks. SD has many attractions like USS Midway, Balboa Park and Zoo etc For me top of list is Hotel Del Coronado (Some Like it Hot) and Torrey Pines Golf Course. SD is not known for its public transport so will take some research to get to golf course in particular. Farmers Insurance Open is sadly on this weekend which is both good news and bad. Access would have been difficult but then may have seen The Striped One lurking on various hotel floors late at night. Will do a segway as is my go on Day 2 to get lay of land. Weather should not be an issue as rain is as rare as a republican majority in California

After a week of shorts and TShirts ( yeah duh) its up to LAX once more to waste time and money with an overnight stay at LAX hotel as Qantass only flies one service daily to NYC and it leaves at 8 am! If I can dump my bags early (with all my winter gear!) at airport may grab the thongs ( both foot and bot bot variety) and head to Santa Monica for afternoon. It a Piers there is plenty to see there. Here all week, try the veal, but then I fly out ok…..

Given the continual warnings about short term rentals in NYC have gone the Hotel option as really only choice. Its bent over the bonnet and chili on stick time but what can you do. Apartment rental problems are becoming an issue in many US cities now. Staying at The Beacon at Upper West Side or UWS as the cool dudes call it. Good location and of course NYC has excellent subway system although invariably walk most places anyway, weather dependent. As my 4th visit have done most of the tourist stuff but this time around have lined up for a Billy Joel concert at Madison Square Garden on Valentines Day and then straight up the Empire State building to wait for Meg. With my luck, King Kong will turn up instead. Chances with either are about the same to be fair. Also have tickets to Daily Show and on wait list for Colbert Late Show. Throw in a full foodie tour through Brooklyn with the famous Ziggy and the days just fill themselves in. And still on prowl for Tina Fey sightings

After 8 nights time to train it down to Baltimore. Many ask why Baltimore? Why not I say. Did a day trip a few years ago and was tres impressed. Sadly it was a Monday so a lot was closed but this is the birthplace of Babe Ruth, the home of John Waters and resting place of Edgar Allan Poe. Thats an interesting golf foursome straight up. Plenty of great museums and now they have the only Guinness Brewery on mainland USA, admittedly a bit out of town. Throw in the Dentistry Museum with George Washingtons teeth and you soon realise a week really isnt long enough! Of course not planning on wandering the streets alone late at night as not the safest city in the world but then the last time I was up past 8 pm at night was with Meg on top of the Empire State building last week. Then it is the old train to NYC and two flights home deal to land in Brisvegas 4 days later or something

Am on the Qantass Dreamliner for all 4 flights and as is norm Premium Economy is the base plan these days. As have a few FF points accumulating have requested a few business class upgrades but doubt will have any success on the two long flights as they tend to be busy. Would be nice to try BC at least once on the Dreamliner as by all accounts is a very good product. As opposed to the PE which is not very good in the leg room caper apparently. All will be revealed. Please dont fret for me fans. Try and get some rest now because February will be an exciting month for y’all following my adventures

2019 has Arrived

Posted: January 5, 2019 in Midlife Crisis in Maryhole

Settled back in Maryhole now after rehabilitation at Flashman Inc for 6 weeks followed by the week of festivities (ie drink, eat, drink) that is Xmas and New Year. Luckily the weather has not been too bad although 31 in Maryhole always feels warmer, and muggier, than 31 at Sunny Coast. Shoulder has a good range of motion now although actually having more issues with bicep at present along the lines of am sure there was some muscle there 2 months ago 😦 Slowly adjusting to driving again and back into mowing on golf course etc. More importantly back home for my 0530 coffee runs!

As always Xmas period was a joy spending time with grandkids and the Della clan. Started with visit to Hervey Bay just before Xmas day to see Ranny and family. Its a lovely beach for young families. Ryan is such a lovely young lad always with a smile on his face

Then it was onto Sunny Coast for Xmas Eve before driving to Brisvagas on Xmas Day for Della gathering at RJE of Coorparoo fame. Quick detour via Carseldine to catch up with Mum first. Due to other family commitments the Della Lunch was actually two lunches and dinners over two days. Glorious weather also meant some serious pool time but didnt let it interfere with the true meaning of Xmas – drinking alcohol

Boxing Day saw a quick trip up to Toowoomba to see the kidlets. They are all growing up so quickly. I also discovered my left handed table tennis skills need some work.

Time to head home on the Thursday then but first we dropped in at Beachmere to complete the six pack. Always a treat to spend time with the two ratbags even if in disguise

So a busy but very enjoyable 48 hrs saw us decamped at Maplehead before saying our goodbyes and getting back into the routine of normal life. CLP works and I dont 🙂 Mind you this will be her last year so interesting times ahead. She cried when I told her I would be going home on Friday morning. Apparently she thought I would have driven home that afternoon…..

Anyhoo not all doom and gloom folks as now WFW is only a month away and surely the US government will be open again by then! Amongst all the moronic things Buffoon Bob says he can still amaze – ” we may keep Govt shut down for months even years” His ignorance and arrogance is mindblowing and clearly still doesnt grasp the concept of 4 yr terms! Not sure any shutdown would impact my visit too much apart from some slowdowns at airports I imagine. Mind you, I think the atmosphere amongst the unpaid workers could be a tad frosty by now let alone in a month. Not much prebooked apart from lodgings and flights and my usual visit to Daily Show.

In TV land the Aussie show Bloom wasnt too bad at all.January sees most of the big shows return so plenty to watch. Its been a very sad Screener season though for some reason. After a slow start second season of Mrs Maisel was good and happy to have Luther back. Watched our standard list of movies over Xmas – Die Hard, Love Actually and When Harry Met Sally – which never really age

In world of sport Cricket is about as bad as it gets and one has to ask – Is Mitchell Starc the Sam Stosur of Australian cricket? Anyone who says well we dont have Warner and Smith have to tell me just how wickets do you think Smith would have got with his part time spin ?? About time we stopped calling them ” the worlds greatest pace attack” Mind you these drop in pitches are a disgrace. What is the point of home series if you dont have wickets that suit your bowlers! Just glad that golf is back on the big stage.

So no great insights to share at this stage and after the joy of the festive season just in a bit of a holding pattern for next month. Enjoy the photos, the witty prose will follow at a later time…..

6 weeks post surgery and not 6 feet under ground counts as a win for this little black duck. More spookily it is also now 6 weeks until Wired for Winter in USA. Do the math. Now we just wait for obligatory US Govt shutdown…..

Now firmly under Physio instructions and improvement continues although still some pain at times early in morning. Finally ditched sling 95% of time unless feel it could be useful like on a packed train or early book in at hotel 😉 Tomorrow see surgeon for final sign off and then back on train to Maryhole ( weather permitting) as will be able to drive car rather than just CLP around the bend. It’s been an interesting 6 weeks but we survived and could not have done it without her help and caring. And I get to take some fruit cake home! Win Win

Before the Zombie cyclone arrived on weekend we decided to have a night in Brisvegas midweek to break the monotony , an early Xmas celebration and also one less early train ride for sweet pea. Instead I got one. All works quiet well. A full day in Brisvegas loomed so slipped on the sling and fronted reception at Stamford Plaza just after 9 am and asked if room ready as I think my staples have burst ( you know if they were still in there…..) and need to change shirt. Well poor old senior your room isn’t ready but for $30 extra you can have a better room on a higher floor right now. Where do I sign sweetheart? “Ah lucky your are left handed then eh.” Um yeah guess so…….damn foiled again. So up to room and then into pool by 0930. Glorious

Time to then check out Felons Brewery for some relatives around at Howard Smith wharves, a relaxing 20 min stroll along the superb riverwalk. What an amazing new establishment of 3 drinking and eating places. Well I assume u can eat there 😉

Then back home for another swim before short stroll into CBD for couple of last minute pressies. Relax for an hour before CLP arrives from work (He He) . Then we decided to head back to Mr Percival’s next to Felons and the place was a jumping by now. Snagged last 2 chairs by railing. Amazing place but too crowded and poor service. a concerning combo.

So we decided to retrace steps, a little less steadily admittedly, and go back to Jellyfish for dinner. Lucky to get a table as the whole riverside precinct was packed. Great meal of cod and salad in a beautiful setting. Its a superb area these days and really elevates Brisvegas as a dining and drinking hub now.

We knew there was a light show on at King George Square which was a bit lame but the young Carol singers were great and suitably festive. It was a lovely night to be out and about . Luckily we found the light show at St Stephens Cathedral on way home and it was brilliant if a tad religo heavy

M

With our great Stamford deal we also got a $20 dining voucher so thought would get a dessert at Pav Bar on site as it was now a bit after 8 pm. Only two in establishment so ordered the chocolate torte and small ice cream for $21 . Yep , living life on the edge baby. After 20 mins waiting I said aloud “ this is hopeless” Staff came over and said just checked will be out in a moment . 10 min later we left and said if ever turns up send up to room. About another 10 mins later it arrived. 40 mins for 30 s work trust me. Get ice cream small tub out of freezer and cut off one slice of torte . Put on plate together .Hopeless indeed

Another morning at the pool next day although some cloud rolling in. Tan is progressing well and while I have to suffer the Della Miraculous Metabolism, CLP has to suffer the Flash Fabulous Quick Tan 🙂 Decided smart time to get new iPad as old one showing its age and that filled in rest of morning . Spent a few hrs with sister Anne and hubby at Strathpine before joining CLP on train home at 5 pm . Yes I caught the right one even using my Senior Go Card!

By now the media was in usual hysteria about the havoc wreaking weather event approaching. Maryhole copped a hiding actually but all in all overblown as usual at least in Southeast . Good rain at Kureelpa on Sunday and by now just keeping an eye on further north in case Tilt Train cancelled on Tuesday. The Golf Course should be green by now and hopefully back into mowing routine by Thursday

Its been an interesting and mostly enjoyable 6 weeks confirming at this stage that going early for op was smart move. The shoulder has plenty of movement now but of course still very weak. I am lucky to have a bad left shoulder as well because when it hurts as well during exercise I know its not me doing too much with right shoulder! Like a positive control….for old age 🙂

A few days back home and then back down for Xmas festivities and family catch ups

I wouldnt say its a great life but dang it will do for now

The lesser known sequel to some early work from Dimple, K.

This week it is Coorparoo with the silent “r” and the loud planes. Our AirRnJ residence is great with pool and a lovely flow through of breeze. It is under one of several flight paths but do get use to it and even prompted me in my spare time to look into the flight paths and found an actual booklet explaining it all. There actually is a “ roster” like operation with some very quiet times. Also a great location for walking to cafes and plenty of public transport options abound. If had been smarter would have got my Senior Go card organised prior. Not all of us Seniors can go when we want ya know 😏 Also walking distance to a Physio which is very handy

I have become an expert at this public transport caper and have even been known to catch a bus, train and rivercat all in the same day . Ok I got lost ,fair cop. As CLP is now working most days I have gone into work with her a couple of times on the bus and shared a breakfast and coffee or two. Well someone has to butter my toast ! Usually entails two buses to RBH and then left to my own devices to walk back into city through the Valley . Pleasant walk with plenty of interesting stops along the way including cafes. There was another option of course which I wisely resisted

Taking a rest after arriving at lower end of city around Riverside and posted a pic which started a short dialogue with a friend of a friend whom we shall call Earle . Because that is his name .

Earle is out in Brisvegas for 6 months while wife Suzanne remains in Italy for start at least. Suzanne is school/college buddy of CLP and in a recurring theme we also stayed in their lodgings gratis a few years back when in Italy . Earle enquires whether would like to catch up for a beer. As it had only just gone 8 am I thought this sounds promising! A rivercat to Tenerife had me dock adjacent before 9 am so we started with a coffee at Campos first in the always excellent Gasworks precinct. Then it was time to blow the froth of a few. Then it rained. Well we couldn’t get wet so went back to Italian Kitchen ( so Earle would be reminded of wifey – am thoughtful like that ) and had Pizza and Peroni again as you do

By now it was time to catch a few buses home after some Xmas shopping in City Mall. Australian Geographic is one excellent shop

Enough adventure for a couple of days . The sun was out and the pool was wet . Also time for first Physio appointment . All went fine and some more exercises to do and less of that pesky cash to carry around in wallet….

On Monday this week was able to catch up with Mum and Sis again as Jas bought Brody down for a visit. Breakfast with CLP first in city and then a bus out to Carseldine Low Security Twilight home before all travelling onto Strathpine. Brody is a delight of course and was a lovely day before a train and bus back home

This morning was second visit to Physio and luckily CLP was able to come along and take notes. Very thorough Physio and he was very happy with progress and “ am ahead of schedule” Then he dropped the turd in the pool so to speak

“ You should be back at golf in 12 months “

What
the
Fuck

He did suggest I could work on my short game first and within 6 months be hitting 7 irons. Yeah could just imagine lining up with Hoges on Wednesday against Beddows and Smails of Burglars Inc and pulling a 7 iron out for tee shot on 450 m Par 5 10th! 6 shots later I could even be in the greenisde bunker with any luck 😰 Mind you this guy does seem a bit on conservative side and just a tad alarmist

Last week “ Have you dislocated your other shoulder “ Um, maybe

Today “ Did you tear your tricep as well “ Um , I don’t know

I tell ya, not dropping my shorts in front of him anytime soon ! I did show him my ankle in all it’s naked glory and he just shook his head and laughed 😏He taped me up some more and we left

So all in all it’s been a good third week and all indications are surgery has held and healing well. The golf prognosis is a concern but lets see how I feel after USA in March next year .

After all I am a superb physical specimen

2 weeks have now passed and all things appear on track. The weather has been pleasant for November which has been very helpful as sling makes you feel like you are trussed up like a Thanksgiving turkey at times. No pain at all , just the restriction of mostly one arm activities. And not the usual arm 😏

In between being waited on hand and foot there has been some socialising or as I call it “ seeking pity from a larger audience” . My brother is back in country full time now so the Ferguson clan with matriarch in tow were able to all get together last Friday for lunch in Brisvegas. An all too rare event sadly

Lovely afternoon and then spent the night in Coorparoo with RJE of the Della clan. Some time with the delightful Eloise and then a quick catch up with BC2 also of said Della clan in the rather excellent Gasworks district

Back home for weekend and then some medical stuff to deal with. First up yesterday was removal of staples. Not especially painful, except to the wallet , and wound looks nice and clean. Mind you have not had a scar on my body that long since my circumcision 60 yrs ago. Here is one I prepared earlier

Today then back down to Kawana to see Surgeon for 2 week check up . It was an interesting visit

1. “ Ah youhave had staples removed”?
Yes , you made the appointment at my GP for me after surgery
2. “ Good you came this week and not last week, I was away “
It’s a 2 week check up. The op was two weeks ago duh.
3. “ Have you started Physio yet “
No, as per printed instructions signed by you , start Physio at 4 weeks!

Fuck me slowly. I yell ya, if not cutting they ain’t concentrating. Eternally grateful he actually did the right shoulder we quickly left . The only real negative news being that golf looks like a 4-6 month delay 😰

Now we are decamped at RJE in Coorparoo for 10 days and need to find a Physio. Hmm. “Orthophysio” specialising in post ortho op recovery is only a 10 min walk away. Sounds promising . Ring Ring ….. Friday 7 am booked.

“ We have to be back in Maplehead in 10 days” .

“ That’s fine, have a uni mate did physio with that works at Maplehead, he can continue work”

Knobber Knobber

I tell ya some days just work out well. If only there was a relaxing place to have a cold beer after a long if very successful day . Oh well, guess this will have to do…..

And on this day let me sign off by congratulating Jasna and Grant on 8 yrs marriage and John and Lorraine on 62 yrs I think. 😘

Also to my old neighbour Bruce Long am thinking of you and Brenda mate on this sad day 😰

When last we left our hero he was looking forward to a sponge bath from a nubile nurse after a minor Nick n Stitch in general vicinity of right shoulder.

Wrong on both counts

Headed off to SCU Private hospital in plenty of time for 11 am admission. It’s an impressive looking place and all seemed to work smoothly. When they get most of your name right and a general idea “we are working on upper body today” then you are in pretty safe hands. Straight to Pre admission then and onto theatre so no time to check out my luxury suite for the night. We were ahead of time really so was surprised when 5 mins into admission a theatre nurse knocked on door and gleefully asked “ Is that David, we are ready “! Well, you may be Sweetheart but I have things to do. As did PA nurse including a shave. I thought she could have let it grow another day and concentrate on me but each to their own. Wheeled into waiting Bay adjacent to my theatre and still barely 1130 am. Then mostly lay there for at least 90 mins with occasional visit 😏 The Anaethetist was an impressive fellow but did comment “ have you had a lot of damage to this area in past, I can’t find the Bracchial nerve”? I was getting the full nerve block apparently as while surgery not major post op pain is they say . We tried several positions mostly involving neck at odd angle until he found it on the US and the fun started. I imagine the pain without it is monumental but when they load it up it ain’t no party for a minute or two. Still waited another 20 mins and rest is mostly a blur until woke up in post recovery

Back in a very pleasant private room and quite alert and no pain really . All obs were good and regular pain medication given. For a private hospital the actual nursing interaction was ordinary but the main things were done. There seemed no real allowance for fact I was one armed and if CLP had not turned up then dinner would have been very difficult. Things like a new bottle of water promised but never delivered etc. Minor things. Slept ok with usual obs breaks but was kinda amazed when it was approaching 7 am next morning and not even a cuppa. Did have a light dinner last night yes but had fasted from 2 am prior to that! Finally asked a nurse for a cuppa and she begrudgingly made one with scowl and comment that breakfast will be soon . Yep, a bowl of cornflakes , a small yoghurt and a juice, and a piece of toast . And yep no help at all in opening or spreading anything .

Hospital make a big deal of discharge at 10 am so seemed very lax in working towards this goal . “ Will surgeon visit this morning as promised ? “ Don’t know” I should add anaesthetist rang personally night before to check on me . Physio arrived and was great. Pharmacy order for the heavy stuff “faxed off “ and then time to remove bandages and clean area before that first all important shower. Luckily by now CLP had arrived other wise shower would have been pointless, not as if any help offered by nurses.

The new waterproof bandages held up even if some new bleeding occurred . Around 0930 now so well on track. I could have slept because no one came back in until 11 am, certainly no surgeon. “ Can I go home?” “ Just waiting on pharmacy , or u could pick up on way out “? That info would have been useful an hour ago Sweetheart .

We left . Again CLP did everything for me , we dropped into pharmacy where the security check before handing over nuclear strength opioids was “ what is you middle name “ ? So back to Flashman Inc Sunshine Coast still relatively pain free

Basically on mixture of Panadol (useless) , Clindamycin, Iboprufen and Oxycodene. By now first hints block was wearing off and hello pain. Of course the sad thing about this drug cocktail is no other cocktails or alcohol may pass your lips. Or at least I thought that was the worst part. Line 27 in the fine print for opioids mentioned constipation! By end of day 2 now I needed a few opioids for night along with other stuff during day. The test would be when the pain was no longer sufficient to still not be drinking alcohol 🤠

Actually a bigger issue arose before then. It arose around upper colon and stayed there actually! After 3 days of NO ACTION in the bowel movement arena and oxycodne stopped for 24 hrs it was certainly time to drink and eat . And the menu was limited

Then it was Epsom salts time. And some praying . By now night time sleeps were hit and miss with simply difficult to get comfortable on back for sleeping. Morning of Day 5 saw some surprising good action , one could even suggest well formed packages were dropped off. Of to Maroochydore for a walk and breakfast with healthy food top of agenda. And close proximity to a toilet . Yes, once the well formed passed we were left with the deformed before we finally found where the Epsom salts had been hiding. An interesting day followed to say the least but was an enjoyable breakfast

Day 6 was time to visit Toowoomba to catch up with the 6 pack all in one place, doesn’t happen often. Lovely day and they really are a treat. I especially enjoyed conversation with Harry who has all his major milestone birthdays lined up with main one being 18 th when he can watch Deadpool and drink Coke😂

So , as the first week passes all seems ok. No real pain anymore , just discomfort. Have staples removed next Monday and then first follow up visit with Surgeon. Surgeon did ring me at home that second night which was great . He explained what he had done and was surprised how bad the bicep tendon was and so had to screw it back on when in theatre 😳 4 weeks with a sling, and then start more Physio and no driving for 6 weeks. Which brings me to the standout this week

CLP has been amazing and would be totally lost without her. At my beck n call almost as if we were married 🕺🏼 She has tended to all my needs and then supplemented with delicious and thoughtful meals and treats. Thanks kiddo 😘

Never been a big fan of Halloween in Australia with the usual over commercialisation but have slowly come around to letting it flow over me as kiddies do seem to enjoy it. Luckily none come knocking on my door and suspect the poisoned spikes on every second step may assist in this regard. When last we left our hero he was awaiting an “over the phone” prognosis from MRI with plan to defer until March next year any surgery so no impact on USA 2019. Surgeon did call that afternoon and as expected gleefully said “I wanna cut you up” . When he added that the bicep tendon had also “slipped off” as well as ruptured supraspinatus tendon it at least explained that particular pain. He agreed it could probably wait until March as long as didnt breathe too heavily or cough or you know … fall over. He He

Quick conflab with CLP and we agreed that if I waited then basically life such as golf and gym etc would be on hold for up to 9 months. Doing the math and allowing for 3 months recovery given my supreme physical fitness thought if we could get it done quickly WFW 2019 would be ok. Ring Ring – “when is soonest I could have surgery” Friday! Nah too soon. Monday , sweet. So the point of this fascinating ramble is that on Halloween 2018 I joined in the festive spirit and agreed to have my shoulder cut up like an old diseased pumpkin! Should then match my head

So now we run around and organise Flashman Inc Maryhole lockdown for extended period. First painful job – contact Centrelink. Wait an hour with GU and then my 20s interview says get surgeon to fill in Form FU123 and then upload completed doc to us with our amazing technology. Simple pimple, although unlikely Surgeon would fill it in quickly. Oh thats right, havent paid the gap yet – ding ding its back in my inbox already 🙂 36 hrs later that is where it remains because of course the “upload document” function at Centrelink isnt working at present! Lets go to dentist, overdue and will be out of town for a while. All good or at least if you think all good includes paying $200 to be told you dont have any problems. Well I do now sweetheart! Still its a nice feeling to think your teeth have lasted another year. Lets celebrate with a wafer thin toffee as have to clear out fridge anyway. Crack – one filling gone 😦 Ring ring, ah I just found I still had $200 in my life savings, any chance of another drilling in next 24 hrs ? Well of course

So have booked train ticket for Sunday to travel down to Flashman Inc Maplehead HQ as no point having car down there for next 6 weeks. CLP seems especially gleeful at present with prospect of carers leave while she sits back laughs at me trying to do everything with my left hand. Well, not everything………I aint that skilled 🙂 The next 2-3 months is a bit of an unknown quantity which of course fits in perfectly with my generally relaxed approach to life and devil may care attitude. I may even get that bloody document uploaded to Centrelink by February. There is at least one thing to look forward to in my short hospital stay

Monday 630 pm

Will sign off now while I still have two hands to type with. Scan the obituaries on Tuesday and if I dont appear you know I woke up.
