HAH! – How About Hobart? The Prelude

Posted: February 14, 2026 in Uncategorized

And quite a long lead in actually with thrills and shenanigans aplenty. First up The Haircut. Men have their favourite Proctologist, Women have their favourite Hairdressers. Just my “luck” , CLPs moved to Maryhole now 😏 Ouch, that hurt . And so she caught the Tilt Train up on Tuesday and we had a couple of days in Hervey Bay at The Mantra at Urangnan before the big event on Thursday . Nothing special unit wise but good location and some great , if very hot, weather. That pool looks great, but what is the little sign I see and why are there Mountaineers outside my window 🤔 FMS, the pool is closed due to “unforeseen circumstances “. Ah no Asshat , getting painters in to paint the outside walls is not unforeseen just bloody stupid planning in Summer. Breathe Breathe. So we had a couple of sherberts at Boat Club and great dinner of Tapas at The Dock adjacent.

Next morning woke to the very pleasant view from our verandah

Time then for a stroll and a search for a coffee near The Pier. Was a glorious morning though hot once more . Coffee was passable but at least walk was some exercise

Check with reception and assured pool would be open at midday. Safe then to head out in the furnace for some mini golf. Great course though easier than I remember. It was a close tussle but then class won out and I got a hole in one on 18 🕺🏻

Dragged ourselves back for the pool at 1230 pm. Ah nope “should be fine in an hour or so Sir” 😡. Went and had some lunch at boat club in the AC and then back to unit. Looked down and sign still up but someone in pool so I went down too. As they say the rest is history

The Haircut was bought forward to 0715 am on Thursday which suited well so we left at 5 am and then were on the road to Flashman Inc by 10 am. Apparently a hair cut takes longer than a Prostate exam or even a colonoscopy it seems🥸

Thursday remained hot and sunny so plenty more pool time. Armageddon , of the rain kind, was tipped to kick off Thursday night and then consolidate over following few days. Brisvegas was looking a tad grim so time for some thinking if only to create more relaxed plan. Was driving down Sunday morning for 10 am flight and booked car into long term park for the week . Now of course weather forecasts, especially of the doomy gloomy kind , are like a bus as in another will be along in 30 mins. They were barring up with totals near 500 ml in some places including Brisbane. Yeah Yeah grain of salt sure but as you get older all you want is a stress free life. And quick haircuts. So…… catching train down tomorrow , staying at Novotel AirPort hotel and then fly out as usual – hopefully – on Sunday . Nothing says romance like spending Valentines Day by yourself in an airport hotel with a bag of chips and a double sars . A bit more expensive but with only one daily flight to Hobart and a short 6 night stay then let’s be on the conservative side . Hey 6 nights, 7 days ……a 6/7 😃. Now that’s all sorted time for some swim time today between the hail, thunder and lightning. Or maybe some slow moving clouds….

Rain was quite consistent overnight – and sadly quite heavy at Hervey Bay – but woke up on Valentines Day ready for some action . Sadly mail is not delivered on a Saturday so no doubt be a couple sacks full of cards to pick up on Monday. Still pays to be prepared

Into Nambour for some morning tea with Sweetpea No 1 before catching train to Eagle Junction. Matt (aka BC 2) and Quinn are kindly giving me a lift to my airport hotel for a fun filled afternoon. Think CLP actually slipped them a C Note to make sure I do actually leave the state.

Train left relatively on time and usual look and demeanour ensured I had a seat to myself. It was a thrilling start to a week long adventure that had me jumping out of my skin. Exhibit A.

Got off at Eagle Junction for my Ultra Uber as in Ultra cheap 🕺🏻. Hotel adjacent just after 12:30 pm and room was ready. Mind you at the price I am paying THEY should have picked me up from EJ if not Nambour. No luck this time with free drinks but told I had a room upgrade. Only on second floor but is indeed a great room and very quiet tucked away in corner away from train. Not sure if I did actually wake or all a dream actually

A quick detour to DFO (David Ferguson Only apparently) but as expected crowded and boring. Picked up a light dinner to have later . Will duck out for a coffee later and then no doubt a sherbert or two later again. Weather overcast and a little drizzle but no big dramas. A bit of walking back and forth will be handy actually.

Now it is Valentines Day and I did have a dream about how the day may turn out…… then reality hit

Next stop Hobart . Hah. Only question will be how long I sit in room early morning before deciding “ of course I can fill in 4 hrs at Qantas Lounge……without alcohol” . I am thinking the 6 am shuttle looks like a keeper .
